Abstract The geological hazards in Zhongyang County, Shanxi Province, involve mainly collapse, potential collapse, debris flow, ground fissure, ground subsidence, etc. Among them, the collapse and potential collapse account for 64.14% of the total geological disasters in the county, which are characterized by small scale and great danger. This paper analyzes the development characteristics, distribution, forming conditions and influencing factors of the geological hazards in Zhongyang. According to the regional situation, the quantitative assessment principle by harassing coefficient (R) method is adopted, with the R value obtained by geological hazard status and development degree(number and size) from the field survey, to evaluate the zonation and distribution of geological disaster risk areas and establish the suitable prevention systems.
